How do we describe who God is?
Many words, like "magnificent", could be a start ...but especially in America, where our choice of words create loose associations, how really descriptive is it?
"It was a magnificent meal, and I just loved the dessert ...it was to die for!!" How's that, again?????
If you tell me you are going to read the entire Bible, then we can talk ...that's great! I can't think of anything better. I can't simply explain to you about God. Without the Bible as our focal point, how could we ever reach the point of reverent awe that brings us to praise and worship?
God is complex ...I can never aspire to comprehend His infinite wisdom.
God is simple ...He gives us simple truths, that we can believe and cling to, as these truths are unchanging.
In truth, I believe in God ...and it is my heart's desire for you to also. But to ask me for proof of why I believe in God ...it would require more than a few sentences and your limited attention, if that is all you are committed to offer.
If I understood somewhat about brain surgery, and aspired for that to be my life's work, I would be forever learning. I would never know all that could be known about such vital subject. And if you asked me to explain brain surgery to you, I would not do it in a sentence or two.
You may have no genuine interest in anyone explaining about it. Or perhaps you may have some interest, but have to admit you can't follow ...because it's all going right over your head. But if it's your brain that is in dire need of surgery, though you may not feel like you want to hear all the details, you most likely would still be interested in the knowledge of those performing the operation. You may be quite interested in finding someone you can place your hope and faith in.
Likewise, if you sincerely ask me about God, don't expect the discussion to merely involve a 30 second commercial before you return to your regularly scheduled program (or life, as you may call it). Either you are interested or you are not!
The Bible says, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." A person who treasures sports, and would rather talk sports than about brain surgery, would not say there's no such thing as a brain, nor deny the importance of them having one ...that would be sporting ignorance.
And many doctors enjoy sports, but it would probably not provide you much comfort if someone on the surgery team was listening to the game while performing a critical operation on you.
So, I'd love for you to ask me about God ...but first ask yourself whether you want to sincerely discuss His wonder and majesty.
Or do you think a few short disclaimers would suffice?
And if the latter is the case, then perhaps you'd fare better having the brain surgery.
